The School District of University City is pleased to announce JaNae’ L. Alfred, Ph.D., will be joining the District as the new principal of Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School starting July 1.
She will take the place of Interim Principal Paula Sams who came out of retirement last year to serve in the interim post. We thank Sams deeply for her dedication to University City Schools’ students and more than 35 years of service in all aspects of K-12 education.
Alfred, a 2002 graduate of University City High School, is currently the assistant principal at Mason Ridge Elementary School in the Parkway School District. From 2015 to 2017 she was an instructional support leader at Vogt and Duschene elementary schools in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Prior to that, she was a classroom teacher in Ferguson-Florissant’s Combs Elementary School for seven years, teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grades.
Alfred earned two M.A.s and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. She earned her B.A. from Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis.
Alfred has produced research on Critical Race Theory in Education, and has numerous professional trainings and certifications, including literacy, anti-bullying techniques, restorative practices and trauma-informed care.
