Growing Together 2022 Gardening Event Scheduled for May 3 at Brittany Woods Middle School

GrowingTogether Spring Kick-off 2022Students in the Brittany Woods Middle School sustainability program are delighted to host their second annual Growing Together Plant Giveaway for all University City residents seeking to grow fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs at home this spring, summer and fall.

The event takes place on Tuesday evening, May 3, in the Brittany Woods Middle School courtyard from 5 to 7 p.m. If rain, the event will move inside the school gym. This is the place where new and seasoned gardeners can pick up seedlings and seed packets and swap gently-used gardening equipment, if needed. The plant giveaway is sponsored by Growing Together: The U. City Schools Food Garden Network, a student-run organization that promotes sustainability by empowering members of the community to grow food on their own and further share in the joy of gardening together. Though the seedlings are free, donations are encouraged at the event to enable everyone who wants to, to grow delicious fruits and vegetables. Please register ahead of time to help the students better plan for the evening.

Last year, student organizers and their mentor, Brittany Woods Teacher Anne Cummings, gave away 2,500 seedlings that yielded more than a ton of healthy, home-grown food in the community.

This year, gardeners in need of gardening supplies may choose from used supplies donated by the community for the event. Supplies include tools, planters and other items.

The event will include a special visit by the Pollinator 3000 van, Brittany Woods’ re-purposed vehicle utilized by the school’s student beekeepers to transport supplies. The students, known as BWMS Pollinator Squad, will talk about their new Parsley Project, an initiative to build the local Eastern Black Swallowtail caterpillar and butterfly population by encouraging the planting of parsley in neighborhoods around University City.

The Growing Together Plant Giveaway 2022 event is also a great place to get to know fellow community gardeners and also learn tips to become a great Green Thumb. Please note, this year's event will not have a drive-through and participants do not need to pre-order seedlings. Please park your car and enter the school.
