First in Civil Rights - Field Trip

Students in a classroom

This year in our collaborative Exploratory class we are reading the book Hidden Figures and research other figures in history who may not have made the textbooks. In order to learn about local historic figures, we took a trip to the Missouri History Museum to explore the #1 in Civil Rights exhibit.

Before leaving students viewed a documentary about the Selma to Montgomery march that emphasized the roles of everyday individuals. The documentary was made by highschool students. We hope to inspire the students to become historians. During the second half of the semester each Exploratory class will select an overlooked individual from history to place into our Hall of Fame. Each class will make a web page highlighting the individuals achievements and a digitally prepared poster, so we can have a "traveling exhibit" for the elementary schools.
