Paint a Word Project

kids paint Courage banner As part of our Week of the Young Child series, we are celebrating long term projects at Julia Goldstein.

In 2018-19, as part of our PNC Mind Full of Words Grant, our school began a special focus on vocabulary. We wanted to explore the ways to make words exciting for our children. Our big idea is that WORDS HAVE POWER.
We created a collaborative community board where parents and children could write a word, children collected words in word boxes, and classes painted words in canvases. As a school, we studied the relationship between writing development and vocabulary. write a word collaborative word board Heart of a Lion words

This year, we decided to continue the project and make something beautiful for our school. In September, we had an outdoor painting party (as a PBIS reward party for good behavior). Every class has a color scheme and created beautiful banners.

We decided to choose words from the district “Heart of a Lion” poster for each class to talk about and paint.Every class chose and painted words related to their class projects. Each class talked about the meanings of these powerful words, and came up with their own definitions. We brainstormed and experiemented with ways to create our words, from masking them with tape, to tracing and writing the letters. Some classes even began to think of their own words to add to our list of "powerful words."

Our goal is to hang our word banners in the Multi-Purpose room as a part of our return to school celebration. Julia Goldstein students are building their vocabulary and literacy skills, and are taking with them the life lesson that WORDS HAVE POWER!
