'Lions and Drones and Robots, Oh My!': Second Annual UCity STEM Expo A Roaring Success

It wasn't a fantasy land with a yellow-brick road and lions, tigers, and bears; rather, the Brittany Woods Middle School gymnasium was filled with lions, drones, and robots as The School District of University City hosted its second annual district-wide STEM Expo on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Nearly 75 participating organizations and clubs representing University City schools and outside entities created interactive displays in topical areas such as coding, robotics and bio-medical sciences.

STEM - which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math - has been integrated throughout curriculum in the District through learning experiences that require complex thinking, problem-solving and discovery.

The aim of the annual Expo is to bring together community and school partners, including students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th so they are able to see what happens before, during, and after their grade levels. The Expo gives students the opportunity to see the potential for real-world STEM exploration and to connect with community partners such as Ameren, Washington University, Missouri Botanical Garden, Bayer, National Society of Black Engineers, Stormwater STL, St. Louis Science Center, and more.

"Our STEM Expo is an amazing representation of our focus on STEM education," said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Sharonica Hardin-Bartley. "Kudos to Beverly Velloff and the entire team for organizing such an awesome event for our community."

Approximately 750 students, parents, presenters, and interested members of the University City community are estimated to have attended the Expo. The inaugural STEM Expo in 2017 attracted around 400 people. General information about the STEM Expo can be found at ucityschools.org/stemexpo.
