English Language Learners (ELL)
-
If your child’s native or home language is not English, the School District of University City has a procedure in place for identifying enrolling students (Home Language Survey). Qualified staff (certification in English as a Speakers of Other Languages)will assess the learning needs for each ELL in reading, writing, speaking, listening and comprehension. Instruction services for ELL’s include direct English language instruction and appropriate content modifications. The School District of University City will provide notification to parents within 30 days from the start of the school year that their child is being placed in an English language program. If a child enters the program during the school year, this time frame is two weeks. ESOL staff will provide parents with timely notification of student progress in conjunction with the quarterly progress reports.
