Social Emotional Learning

Relationships are foundational to how human beings function in society.  The key to those relationships being healthy, productive, and beneficial is a knowledge of self and an understanding of how that self exists with others.  The mission of social-emotional learning in the SDUC is to equip students with the knowledge, language, and skills needed to be global citizens who foster their own wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of others.

The work of Social-Emotional Learning in the SDUC aligns with the district's “Portrait of a Graduate.”  We envision students who are academically prepared, innovative problem solvers, mindful of self and mindful of others. We believe the development, nurturing and strengthening of these key attributes enables each of our students to not only be well and flourishing human beings, but also college, career, and civic ready citizens upon leaving our system.

Social-Emotional Learning in SDUC engages students in learning experiences rooted in anti bias/antiracist pedagogy and makes the following collective commitments that reflect our values:

1. Annual increase the number and percentage of students displaying social-emotional competence in the areas of 
   - Emotional regulation
   - Growth mindset
   - Self-efficacy
   - Self-management
   - Social awareness
   As measured by various district assessments, until at least 80% of students display developmentally-appropriate social emotional behaviors without additional instructional time and supports.

2. Building staff will engage in at least 2 professional development opportunities aimed at increasing adult and student social-emotional competence.

3. Utilizing classroom observation data, there is evidence of social-emotional learning integration into all academic content areas.
