Since 1975, we have helped adults learn.

The School District of University City Adult Education & Literacy Program (AEL) Program provides basic education to adults, ages 16 and over, so they may become productive, self-sufficient and contributing members of society.

Our main focus is to provide programs and services in three core areas:

• HiSET: In January 2014, the State of Missouri switched from the GED Test to the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), a computer based exam. We offer orientation to this new test several nights a week. Go HERE to learn more. (Women In Charge is a HiSET site affiliated with the District and offers classroom instruction in small groups including one-on-one tutoring that is individualized, allowing each woman to progress at her own speed.)
• Literacy Education: Learning to read and write is essential to achieve success. Without these skills, the chances of progress and growth are quite limited. We have trained volunteer tutors who work one-on-one with individuals to improve vocabulary, comprehension, writing skills, and/or prepare for job searches. For more information, go HERE.
• English as a Second Language: We believe in the power of words and helping individuals learn and understand the power of English words. This program is particularly important to University City's diverse and growing community, as many are likely to meet someone from another country as they travel about in the city. The focus of this program is to provide students, for whom English is not their primary language, with a working knowledge of English in preparation for citizenship tests, the workplace, additional education and daily living.
