2/1/2021:Greetings UCHS Families:

I hope this message finds everyone well. February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month each year. This annual observance was initially created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and is now officially observed by governments in the United States, Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. This observance grew out Negro History Week in 1926, with the second week in February being chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. By the late 1960's, as a result of the Civil Rights Movement and an increasing awareness of Black identity, Negro History Week evolved into Black History Month and was officially recognized by President Gerald Ford in 1976. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada and is officially observed in October in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Black History Month is a time set aside each year as President Ford stated, "to seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." "The Black History Month 2021 theme, 'Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity' explores the African diaspora, and the spread of Black families across the United States" (History Channel, 2021).

Greetings UCHS Families!

I hope this message finds you and your families as well as possible under the current circumstances. In the ongoing interest of student wellness, I have made a decision to implement the following changes related to upcoming semester finals. This will impact the cumulative final exams, not unit exams that teachers will need to administer (*some teachers may choose to forego the final and only use the unit test).

  • All students who have an A grade entering the semester exam window (Week of 12/14) are exempt from the final exam in the course but must attend classes through the end of next week; (failure to attend classes can forfeit exemption);

  • All students with B, C, CR, or NC entering the semester exam window (Week of 12/14) will take the planned final exam in the course and the grade earned on the exam will REPLACE the lowest summative assessment score up to that point in the semester; this will create a scenario whereby the overall semester grade can only be improved by the semester exam.

*Dual credit and AP courses are encouraged to implement this, but may modify this plan.

My sincere hope is that these modifications to our semester exam schedule will bring much needed relief to our students. Obviously, we are confronted with unprecedented times, which call for unprecedented support of our students. Please contact me directly with any questions. Have a great rest of the week!

Respectfully,

Mike Peoples

Ameren - Utility Assistance Info

We know the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for more and more of our customers to make ends meet. That's why Ameren Missouri is providing an additional $500,000 in energy assistance, with expanded income eligibility guidelines designed to help a wider range of customers.

If you need help but don't qualify for Missouri's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), you may be eligible for Clean Slate funds – even if you didn't qualify previously. For example, customers in a four-person household making up to $65,500 a year, or $5,458 per month, are eligible to apply.

Clean Slate helps eligible customers clear the remaining balance on their account after they pay 25% of their past-due balance. Up to $500 in Clean Slate funds will be applied to the remaining account balance. Any leftover balance will be entered into a payment agreement.

To be eligible for the new Clean Slate funds, you must NOT have received Clean Slate funds previously AND must meet the following requirements:

  • Household income up to 250% of the federal poverty level and not eligible for LIHEAP.

  • Pay 25% of your past-due balance.

  • Prove loss of income or employment due to COVID-19.

  • Have an active Ameren Missouri electric account that is past due, or reconnecting services.

For more information, or to apply online, visit AmerenMissouri.com/CleanSlate.

You can also visit AmerenMissouri.com/EnergyAssistance to learn about LIHEAP and other energy assistance programs. You'll find a link to the LIHEAP application at the top of the energy assistance webpage.

Waiting to see if you qualify can be stressful, and we want to help you avoid disconnection. We offer several payment options and will work with you to make payment arrangements. To learn more or to make a payment, go to Ameren.com.

      • UCHS Drama Club is presenting a live streamed production of this award-winning play. A woman carries her heart, broken into nineteen pieces, in a small paper bag. A man shrinks to half his former size, after losing hope in love. A couple keep the love they have given each other in large red bags, or compress the mass into the size of a diamond. These playful and surreal experiences are commonplace in the world of John Cariani’s Almost, Maine, where on one deeply cold and magical Midwinter Night, the citizens of Almost -- not organized enough for a town, too populated for a wilderness -- experience the life-altering power of the human heart. Relationships end, begin, or change beyond recognition, as strangers become friends, friends become lovers, and lovers turn into strangers. Propelled by the mystical energy of the aurora borealis and populated with characters who are humorous, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and sincere, Almost, Maine is a series of loosely connected tales about love, each with a compelling couple at its center, each with its own touch of sorcery. Please join us for this ground-breaking production live on stage at University City High School for one night only!

Parent Teacher Conference Information

Greetings UCHS Families!

I hope this message finds everyone well. Our Annual Fall Parent Teacher Conferences are rapidly approaching and will be held next week on Wednesday (10/7) and Thursday (10/8). We will conduct our conferences via Zoom session similar to Curriculum Night, however, there will be a few changes to our process to make it easier for families:

PTC Fast

To begin, we are introducing a new resource for families called PTC Fast that enables families to conveniently schedule their conference times with teachers (due to the need to conduct conferences online, we are asking for you to schedule all of your conferences in advance using this tool). To access the resource, simply click here. While in this menu, select your student's teachers and available conference times for each teacher with whom you would like to meet. You will then be prompted to enter your e-mail address for confirmation of your appointments. It's that simple! You will then receive your confirmed schedule via e-mail later. To access your conferences, we will be using the same schedule that we used for Curriculum Night (this will be sent out Tuesday evening prior to conferences). Once the schedule is available, you will access the teachers by selecting the appropriate Zoom link during your scheduled times.

Schedule for Conferences

All conferences will be scheduled in 20 minute blocks. You are not required to stay with teachers in a conference for that entire amount of time. Please log in to the conference at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled time. You will be sent to a waiting room and admitted when your teacher is available. To better accommodate our families, we will be available for conferences at the following times:

  • Wednesday (10/7)

    • Conferences will begin at 8 am and conclude at 7:40 pm with the following times of closure for staff:

      • 10:30 am - 11:20 am - Break for Staff;

      • 12:10 pm - 1:00 pm - Lunch;

      • 3:55 pm - 4:55 pm - Dinner.

  • Thursday (10/8)

    • Conferences will begin at 4:00 pm and conclude at 6:55 pm.

Our hope is that you will find this process to be clear, convenient, and efficient. As always, please contact me if you are in need of any additional information. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Respectfully,

Mike Peoples

8/24/2020

Despite the unpredictable and unprecedented times we’re living through, I am excited to begin the 2020-21 school year with you - our students, families, and staff! We truly are one U City family. As we plan for another successful year, I look forward to our process of BUILDing stronger relationships, as a community, while we continue to BUILD strong and resilient students.

As Superintendent Hardin-Bartley communicated, there is a need for this school year to begin with students working remotely due to circumstances related to COVID-19. With school beginning remotely, all students will be expected to use their Chromebooks to participate in scheduled class sessions. Teachers will take attendance for online sessions and will record absences. Detailed information regarding these expectations is in our SY2021 Distance Learning Plan.

Each day of our first week of school will begin with grade-level meetings/webinars followed by an abbreviated U-day schedule. Administrators, counselors and other building leaders will discuss expectations for UCHS students.

While current circumstances present challenges, I am confident that we are well-prepared to support the diverse learning needs of students through an online educational model. We will also address the socio-emotional needs of students through several resources available to all of our students.

Let’s continue to bond together and remain committed to our strength of community! UCHS is a family, and we will emerge from this extended closure stronger than ever.

Respectfully,

Mike Peoples,
Principal of University City High School
