Program Overview and History
The Alternative School Program provides educational services to high school students in a non-traditional school setting. The program offers much smaller class sizes allowing for more individualized instruction, flexible schedules, assistance in developing appropriate social skills, and opportunities to gain skills through community service and/or work experience programs. Applications for the program are obtained through the school counselor and a limited number of students are accepted each semester. Students must show progress to remain in the program. Those earning enough credits to graduate earn a University City High School diploma and participate in that graduation ceremony.
On September 6, 2005, the Alternative School Program opened in their new location, the McNair Building, 8136 Groby Road.
On April 5, 2007 the Alternative School Program was renamed to honor long time school board member, Joy Lieberman.
During the summer of 2009, the Lieberman Learning Center was relocated to a portion of Brittany Woods Middle School, located 8325 Groby Road, to allow Barbara C. Jordan and Pershing Elementary schools to use the classroom space while their buildings are rebuilt.
Parents should contact the school secretary regarding additional forms that may be required for enrollment at this site.
