News & Notes - May 2
This spring sports seasons are in the home stretch and district and conference tournaments are in full swing. Please support the student-athletes that have continued to work hard at the end of the school year and have been battling the weather, opponents, and the spring time blues associated with the end of a school year by coming to an event and cheering on the teams this week.
GOLF: Please congratulate junior Bryce Balber for qualifying for the MSHSAA Sectional Golf Tournament, which will be held this Wednesday, May 4th at Aberdeen Golf Course in Eureka, Missouri. Bryce qualified by shooting a front nine score of 38 at Districts last week at Forest Park. Bryce's 38 placed him 7th overall of the individuals-which the top 15 qualified him to advance.
BOYS TENNIS: The boy's tennis team had a busy week winning two matches against Kirkwood and winning their first team match of the season with a 6-3 win over Sumner on Friday at Heman Park. Alec K won two matches this week and had a wash out against Parkway Central. Ben Mizes and Joseph Egan paired up for a doubles victory against Kirkwood, while Jeff Standifer and Connor Crowe won their first matches of the season against Sumner.
The tennis team will compete in the Suburban South and West Conference Cross-over Tournament pool at Webster Groves starting on Monday at 4:00pm.
BASEBALL: The Lions had several days off between games due to the rain, but ended the week with two straight wins. They won their final two games in the Ritenour Tournament by defeating DeSoto 16-12 (HR by Mavropules, Kneller, Phillips, W-Small) on Friday and McCluer North 17-4 (HR by B. Evans, W-on Saturday. The Lions have earned 9 wins and look to get back to .500 on Tuesday at Rockwood Summit at 4:15pm.
GIRLS SOCCER: The girls soccer team had an exciting week battling the elements to split a pair of contests. The Lions roared to 1-0 lead in the first 30 seconds and cruised to a 10-0 win over Normandy on Thursday. The scoring against Normandy was: Anna Carlsson (2), Dominiqe Patrick (2), Abby Mutrux (1), Daphne Pastard (1), Rachel Sobotka (1), Addy Adewale (1), Ursula Monaghan (1), and Rachel Aiken (1).
The girls received the #2 seed in the MSHSAA District Tournament and will play opening round action against Vashon on Monday, May 16 at 5:15pm. The Championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17 at 4:15pm and the entire tournament will be held at Harris Stowe State University in St. Louis, MO.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: The boys volleyball team had a jammed packed week with games everyday except Monday. They played a tough match on Thursday against conference rivals Seckman, but lost in three games. The team also participated in the Suburban Crossover Tournament Friday night and Saturday morning, giving veteran players Markus Ashford and Avion Ashford chances to improve their team leading hitting percentages.
The boys volleyball team will have their final home match of the season on Tuesday, May 3rd at 4:15/5:15 against Parkway Central. The team will honor seniors, Philip Jones-Williams, Nick Warford, James Jackson, and Keith Davis.
WATER POLO: The boys Water Polo team will compete in the 21 team Championship Tournament on Friday, May 6th at Ladue High School. The Lions will face the #13 seeded Lafayette Lancers at 7:00pm. If they win, they will advance to play Parkway West at 3:45pm on Saturday, May 7th.
TRACK: The boys and girls track team had a wet few weeks and saw events rescheduled and canceled.
The boys will host the Suburban South Boy's Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 5 & 6. Please come support the boys JV and Varsity Track teams as they compete for a conference championship!
News & Notes - April 18
The track teams were back on the road after hosting the very successful Charlie Beck Invitational Meet a week ago. Darion Boure won the Triple Jump and Long jump at Henle Holmes Invitational Meet and Tony Newman placed in the 400 with season best performance! Kayla Heidelberg placed in both the 100 and 100 Hurdles improving on her season bests, while the Girls Sprint Medley placed 3rd (Crystal Laden, Andreaunna Hawkins, Ashley White, and Jamesha Howard).
The girls soccer team has continued their successful start to the season and battled the rain and cold (along with several tough teams) in the Webster Groves Tournament this past weekend. The Lions started the week off with a 2-0 win over North County Tech and dropping a tough 1-0 match to Brentwood. The team lost to very solid teams in Mehlville and Webster in the Webster Tournament.
Last week was a busy week for the boys volleyball team. They played three matches against Ritenour, Parkway West, and Kirkwood, plus a tournament on Saturday. All of the games were tough and close for the Lions. The team advanced to the Silver Bracket on Saturday at the Parkway Central Tournament, just missing the finals. Markus Ashford leads the team in passing percentage, and Avion Ashford leads the team in kills (13 last week alone). This week the Lions take on Eureka on Tuesday and Fort Zumwalt North on Wednesday at UCHS.
The baseball team is 7-6 on the season, splitting a pair of games last week and having 2 games washed out with rain. The Lions dropped a tough game 6-3 to the Longhorns of Parkway West behind a solid 7 inning pitching performance from Brandon Evans. U City started off hot scoring 5 in the first inning and holding on to beat Parkway North 9-8. Will Evans, Jake Mavropoulos, and Brandon Evans all posted a pair of hits in the win.
The boys tennis team won two matches against DuBourg and one against Parkway West. Yosef Groner has shown improvement all season and won his first match of the season against DuBourg, while Alec Kaczkowski was dominant as the Lions #1 singles winning the other two matches.
In golf, Bryce Balber was a co-medalist shooting a 39 (season best) and Jake Hammond also shot a season best 49 against Seckman at Ruth Park last week. The team walked the course to prepare for Conference and District matches with 19 holes in the Lindbergh Open placing 12th as a team. Jake Hammond was the team leader with a 53 against Parkway North.

News & Notes - April 11
The Track team hosted the Charlie Beck Invitational track meet this past Saturday. There were 31 teams with both a JV and Varsity at the meet and the weather was beautiful. Fort Zumwalt West won the girls varsity division with the Lions finishing 6th overall. Hazelwood Central won the boys varsity division with U City finishing 10th overall. U City star performers included: Emmanuel Price (Champion in the long jump), Darion Boure (Champion in the triple jump), Lydia Bohlen (3rd in the 400) and Kayla Heidelberg (2nd in the 200). Thanks to everyone that supported the teams by attending the meet, the coaches for running the meet and all of the event volunteers that helped it run smoothly.
The water polo team competed in the Founder’s Cup Invitational this past week. Thanks to everyone that volunteered on Monday and Friday as U City did a nice job hosting two rounds of the tournament. The team earned a tie with Mehlville 4-4 behind Dante McKinnie’s 6 saves. Dan Egan has been the leading scorer the past few games with 4 goals against Kirkwood and 3 against Ladue.
The baseball team is currently 6-5 on the season after dropping 3 out of four this week. The Lions dropped a one-run game, 8-7 to Clayton; James Lenard was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Will Kneller drove in an extra-inning run to beat Affton 6-5; The Lions dropped a 15-5 game to Lindbergh; and Kevin Looby homered in a 12-10 loss to Mehlville. The JV Lions finished their pool play action at 2-1 in the University City/Balls-N-Strikes JV Tournament for a share of first-place.
The boy’s volleyball team has won 3 out of 7 games and is 1-3 in matches so far this season. The highlight was a 2-0 sweep of St. Francis Borgia (25-23, and 25-21). The Lions won the first game 25-21, but dropped the match with 17-25 and 20-25 games against Fox (Avion Ashford had 4 kills).
The golf team has completed five matches this season and is improving each time out. Bryce Balber is the team leader in FedEx points and shot 41 in nine holes in each of the last two matches.
The girl’s soccer team is 2-4 on the season and is playing well while learning a new system and adapting to the new coaching staff. They dropped contests to Lutheran North, Parkway North, and Webster over the past week. The Varsity plays in the Webster/Kirkwood Invitational this week, while the girls compete in the Warrenton JV Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
The boy’s tennis team plays Bishop DuBourg at home on Tuesday, April 12. They competed well last week in matches against Parkway North and Clayton.
News & Notes - April 7
The Baseball team may have had the best 24-hour period in U City Baseball history this past weekend. The JV and Varsity went a combined 5-0 in tournament games. The Varsity baseball team beat Eureka 16-15 by coming from behind to score 7 runs in the 6th inning of the Gary Donahue Tournament on Friday. The Lions traveled to the North County Classic Tournament on Saturday and beat Ritenour 10-3 in the semi-finals. U City won the Championship game by beating Hazelwood Central 8-3. The JV Lions won both games in the University City/Balls-N-Strikes Tournament at Jack Buck Field on Saturday, beating Trinity and Maplewoods.
The Girls Soccer team started the season by beating Hazelwood East and McCluer South, and dropping a game on Friday to Affton to start the season off with a record of 2-1. The newly created JV started the season off scoring goals in two straight games and earning a tie with a late goal against McCluer South.
The Water Polo team has played well in the early season and are competing in the Founder's Cup Tournament this week. The tournament started on Monday and ends on Saturday at Ladue. University City hosted on Monday and will host on Friday (4/8) at a time TBA.
Tennis is in full swing and is led by their #1 singles player Alec Kaczkowski. Come support the Lions at Heman Park on (4/8) McCluer, (4/12) Bishop DuBourg, and (4/15) Sumner.
The Boys and Girls Track team will host the Charlie Beck Invitational Track meet this Saturday, April 9 starting at 8:00am. There are 32 Varsity teams and 32 JV teams attending this premier St. Louis Track Meet. Please plan on attending and supporting the track team.
The Boys Volleyball team is showing progress and looks to improve going into this week. They will Play in the Parkway Central Tournament on April 16 and feature home games (4/12) Parkway West, (4/14) Kirkwood, and (4/15) Eureka.
News & Notes - March 29
The Spring sports programs are attempting to avoid the weather and enjoy the start to their season. Please come support the Lions this week (wether permitting).
Varsity baseball had two games called because of darkness and two games postponed due to weather. The varsity lost a short game to Fox 15-9 and tied Northwest (short game) at 7 a piece. The JV baseball team split their first two games by beating Hazelwood East and losing a tight game to Oakville.
Water Polo dropped their first two games of the season, but were very competitive. The Lions travel to the Rockwood Summit Invitational this week and will host four games a night in The Founder's Cup Invitational on Monday, April 4 and Friday, April 8.
Golf opens their season at home on Tuesday, March 29 with a 3:30 tee time at Ruth Park against Rockwood Summit after their match with Clayton was washed out on Monday.
Girls Soccer opens their season at home on Tuesday, March 29 with a 4:00pm Varsity and a 5:15pm JV contest against Hazelwood East.
Boys Volleyball starts their season at home on Tuesday, March 29 with a 4:00 JV and 5:15 Varsity match with Affton.
Boys Tennis opens play on Wednesday, March 30 at Heman Park with a 4:00 match against Oakville.
News & Notes - February 14
The Wrestling team competed in the MSHSAA District Tournament at Fort Zumwalt East this past weekend. The team had a great showing with several wrestlers in the second day of the tournament with a chance to go to the MSHSAA Missouri State Wrestling Championships. Jeremiah Hathorn finished 2nd in the 145 pound weight class and Tarique Jefferson finished 3rd at 215 pounds. They have both qualified for the State Championships and will be competing at Mizzou Arena (Columbia, MO) on Thursday through Saturday (February 17-19).
The Girls Swim team will finish the season with Senior Night and Staff Appreciation Night today with a home meet vs. Barat Academy at the UCHS Natatorium. If you haven't come to watch the girls swim this winter, stop by the 4:15 meet and cheer for the LIONS as they wrap up their season.
The Boys Basketball team had a great week and is sizzling hot at the right time. The LIONS have won four games in a row including: Seckman (82-42), Jennings (78-67), Parkway Central (62-53), and Ritenour (75-51). They will play their last home game on Tuesday, February 15 at 7:00pm vs. Kirkwood.
The Girls Basketball team plays every night this week including make-up games vs. Fox and Jennings. The LIONS will host Parkway North on Friday at 7:00pm and recognize their Seniors.

News & Notes - February 7
The Lions athletic teams battled the ice and snow last week and will be playing make-up over the next two weeks. Most contests have been rescheduled and will appear on the "This Week's Games" list on the Athletics Home & News page over the next few weeks. Please check the updated schedules and plan on attending a game or two as the winter seasons wrap up.
The University City LIONS Classic Wrestling Tournament was a huge success this Saturday. 13 teams battled the surprising snow and created a great atmosphere for high school wrestling in all three gyms. Webster Groves won the overall tournament team championship, and University City's Jeremiah Hathorne won the Championship at his weight class. The wrestling team completed their "Service Learning Project" by collecting canned goods to donate to a local food bank as part of the tournament. Congratulations to the wrestling teams, coaches, and everyone that assisted in making the event a huge success! The LIONS will compete on Friday and Saturday in the MSHSAA District Tournament at Fort Zumwalt East High School.
The boys basketball team has won three of their last four games and is sizzling hot entering the home stretch of the season. The Lions beat Rockwood Summit 85-54 on Friday to move to 10-7 on the season. The only setback in the past two weeks was in the Championship game of the Fox Tournament to Ladue by a score of 64-62. The Lions have earned 2nd place in two competitive Varsity tournaments so far this season.
The girls basketball team was competitive in their last two games dropping close contests to Fox in the Lindbergh Tournament and last Friday after 6 days off practice due to the weather to Rockwood Summit. The team spent all day on Saturday completing their "Service Learning Project" assisting in various capacities with the LION Classic Wrestling Tournament.
The girls swim team has showed improvement all season long and will compete in the Conference Championships this Thursday (2/10 - 4:30pm) at Friday (2/11 - 6:00pm) at Ladue HS.
Please plan on attending the winter sports season Black & Gold Pep Rally on Friday, February 11 at around 1:30pm in the UCHS gymnasium. Wear your Black and Gold to support UCHS!
Please plan to participate in a fund raiser to help the Flynn Park and Brittany Woods Archery Teams attend National Archery tournament in May. WIL 92.3 radio has a “Spirit Bracket Challenge” with Buffalo Wild Wings. Sixteen teams from the region will go head-to-head in a competition. If University City wins, they advance to the next round. But even if UCHS doesn't advance, the team keeps 10% of all dine-in food purchases. Use the attached "BWW Fundraiser" coupon on FEBRUARY 9 (from 4-10pm) at the Creve Coeur location to help support the team.
News & Notes - January
The winter sports teams and coaches have been working hard to stay competitive with the snow days and transition between semesters. These coaches and teams put in many hours over the holiday break and are in the midst of conference play. Please come support the teams over the next few weeks before you miss the entire winter sports season!
Boys Basketball
The Varsity team is 8-6 on the season and is currently the #1 seed in the Fox Tournament this week. The Lions were the runner-up in the Borgia Thanksgiving Tournament, earned a first round win in the Meramec College Holiday Tournament, and have been thought of as one of the best small schools in the area in the local media.
Travon Williams is averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists a game to lead the Lions and was named to the All-Tournament team at Borgia and Meramec. Prince Cody averages 15 points and 3 assists, while Brandon Wagner chips in 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.
The JV Boys team was the runner-up in the CBC JV Tournament and will play for the consolation championship in the Rockwood Summit JV Tournament at 11:00am on Jan. 28 (Sat).
Girls Basketball
The Varsity team is currently 2-7 and showing signs of improvement. They finished 5th at the Cardinal Ritter Holiday Tournament and are currently in the consolation semi-finals at the Lindbergh Tournament.
Devin Alfred leads the team with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assist a game. Autumn Jacobs averages 9 points and 3 rebounds; Diarra Williams is averaging 7 points and 8 rebounds, Mytressa Taylor with 5 points and 5 rebounds, and Sammiyah Clay 5 points and 10 rebounds.
Wrestling
The Wrestling team may be small on numbers, but they are big on heart. The Lions have been very competitive all season making a clean sweep in the U City Quad (3-0) and winning the Maplewood Tri-meet (2-0). Jeremiah Hathorne is 28-5 and captured the Championship at the Fort Zumwalt North Tournament. Tarique Jefferson is 27-8 and finished 3rd in the Cape Central Tiger Classic. Tyler Buckner is 20-11, with a season best of 4th in the St. Charles Invitational.
The U City Lion Invitational is a 12 team wrestling tournament and will be held at U City HS on Saturday, Feb. 5. Matches start at 9:30am and the event will run through most of the day. Please plan on attending!
Girls Swim
The girls have shown plenty of improvement throughout the season and are looking forward to a competitive Conference Championship meet. The girls showed vast improvement in the Cape Central City of Roses Invitational with several swimmers notching personal records. Tasha McClendon improved 1:10.57 on 100m freestyle, Alaina York improved her 50m backstroke time by 5.92, and Keana Henderson shaved 7.42 seconds off her 100m breaststroke.
News & Notes - December 14, 2010
The Boys Varsity Basketball team lost a 72-71 game to highly-ranked C.B.C. and beat McCluer South 79-65 to move to 4-2 on the season. The Lions are just outside the top 10 in the Post Dispatch large school poll, handing the small school #1 Soldan their only loss of the season. The boys travel to Normandy in a 5:30 and 7:00 JV/Varsity contest on Wednesday, December 15. The varsity will play Washington in the Suburban Conference vs. GAC Conference Shootout on Saturday, December 18 at 4:00pm at the St. Charles Family Arena (St. Charles, MO).
The Wrestling team had two champions at the Ritenour Invitational: Eric Alexander and Tarique Jefferson. The wrestlers have a home dual with Kirkwood at 5:00 on Wednesday, December 15 and will travel to the Cape Central Tiger Classic (Cape Girardeau, MO) on December 17 & 18.
The Girls Swim team opened their season with a home meet against Clayton and by attending the McCluer North Relays. Highlights from the week included: Joi Miller posting close to personal record in several freestyle events against Clayton; and Ariel Neely, Alaina York, Martha Kenyon, and Charme Benson earned a fourth place medal at McCluer North Relays. The girls have a home meet at 4:15 on Tuesday, December 14 against Kirkwood, and travel to Rockwood Summit for a meet on Thursday, December 16 at 4:15.
The Golden Girls Dance Team and Lionettes Pom Squad were invited to the Gateway Dance Showdown - 7th Annual Dance Championship Series on December 5, 2010. The Golden Girls took 1st Place in Jazz, the Lionettes took 1st Place in Poms, and both teams combined took 1st Place in Hip-Hop.

The Boys and Girls Basketball teams are off to a good start this season. The Boys Varsity is at 3-1 on the season with a 2nd Place finish in the Borgia HS Turkey Tournament and a win over Hazelwood East last week. The Girls Varsity won their opener against Normandy last week and dropped a tough one against Hazelwood East last Friday to start the season 1-1.
The wrestling team won both duels in the Maplewood-Richmond Heights Tri-Meet, defeating MRH and Trinity Catholic. The Lions fared well at the Ft. Zumwalt North Invitational with the following medalist: 1st place Jeremiah Hathorn- 140 lbs., 2nd place Eryc Alexander- 125 lbs., 4th place Gianni Cook- 130 lbs., 4th place Lynden Peoples- 189bs
The Girls Varsity will compete in the Nerinx Hall Invitational Tournament this week and will play Cor Jesu on Monday, December 6. The Lions will play again Tuesday and Thursday in the NIT.
The Boys JV a/Varsity basketball team will host CBC on Monday, December 6 at 4:00/5:30 and will play their only other home game in December on Thursday, December 9 against McCluer South (JV at 4:00 - Varsity at 5:30).
Girls Varsity Swim opens the winter season by hosting Clayton at 4:15 on Tuesday, December 7.
Wrestling will travel to Ritenour for the Huskies Invitational on Saturday, December 11.
News & Notes - November 29, 2010
Congratulations to the University City Boy's Varsity Basketball team in their 2nd place finish in the St. Francis Borgia Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament. The Lions pulled off a victory over the #2 seeded Soldan Tigers on Thanksgiving Day. They followed up with a victory over the #3 seeded home team Borgia Knights on Friday in the semi-finals. The Lions played #1 seeded McCluer North on Saturday in the Championship game and lost a hard fought game to one of the State's topped ranked teams. The Lions started the season strong with two wins and played the top 3 seeds in the tournament.
News & Notes - November 4, 2010
Don't miss the Athletic Family Night on Tuesday, Nov. 9 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the UCHS cafeteria. All 8th-12th grade athletes and their families are invited to attend. Je'Mone Smith, former NFL player (Philadelphia Eagles) will discuss the college recruiting process, the NCAA Clearinghouse, and how he made it from a small college to the NFL. Smith travels the country speaking on the recruiting process and was the keynote speaker at the U.S. Army Senior Bowl.
Two University City runners have qualified for the MSHSAA State Cross Country Championships in Jefferson City, MO. David Lambus was the Individual District Champion this past week in the District meet at Warrenton. Eliana Hudson also qualified for the MSHSAA State Championships by finishing in the top 15 at the District meet. Claire Hulett will also be attending the State Championships as an alternate, she missed qualifying by finishing in 16th position. The event is Saturday, November 6 at Oak Hills Country Club in Jefferson City, MO. The girls class 3 race is at 9:35am and the boys class 3 race starts at 10:45am.

The Fall sports season is winding down. Thanks to all of the student-athletes, school staff, administrators, parents, fans, Booster Club, performing groups, and general supporters. We made this a special season for our student-athletes.
- Softball - The University City Lions Softball team finished 11-13 this season. The team finished second in the Suburban East Conference Tournament and reached the double-digit win plateau, which were two of the team’s season goals. Tuyanna Roundtree and Kayla Heidelberg were selected as 2nd team members of the All-Conference team. Keanna Henderson had an on base percentage of over .600 and Portia Terry led the team in fielding with only two errors at first the entire season.
- Girls Volleyball - The Lady Lions won six games and defeated Gateway Tech to earn a win in the MSHSAA District Tournament. The Lions lost to highly-ranked and 2010 District Champion Incarnate Word Academy in the Semi-finals. Armani Cross was selected to the All-District 2nd Team and MyTresa Taylor was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.
- Girls Tennis - The tennis team won two matches against a mostly stiff Suburban South schedule this season. The Lions did excel in several tournaments this season. U City won the McCluer Tournament behind Rachel Sobatka and Meagh Hopes who won the doubles and Jasmine Dennis that finished second in the singles. The girls finished 3rd in the Farmington Tournament. Kailey James finished second in the #3 singles in the Suburban South/West Crossover fourth flight and Valeria Toles won a singles match in the MSHSAA Individual District Tournament.
- Field Hockey - The Varsity team finished with a record of 13-10-1. The Lions were one of the best public school teams this season finishing as the runner-up in the Public School Tournament (Division 1), dropping the Championship game 1-0 to Lafayette. UCHS finished ranked #13 out of 27 area teams (which is very good for a public school). Mandy York led the team with 15 goals, Merinda Morley had 14, and Kat Simpson scored 13 goals. Ellie McCray had an 80% save average with 136 saves throughout the season as the team’s top Goalkeeper. Anna Carlsson and Kat Simpson will represent U. City in the St. Louis All-Star Senior Game on Sat, Nov. 13 at 11:00 at Nerinx Hall.
- Cross Country - The Cross Country team has shown solid performances all season long and will be sending David Lambus (District Champion) and Eliana Hudson to the State Cross Country Championships in November. David Lambus earned many awards, including: winning the Lutheran North Invitational and Border War Invitational, earning All-Conference honors, All-District honors, and Post-Dispatch All-Metro honors. Eliana Hudson was selected as an All- District award winner. Claire Hulett also had a solid season missing qualifying for the State Championships by one place.
- Football - The Lions had three returning starters and inexperience was a part of the 1-9 season record. All-Conference awards went to seniors Branden Walker (1st team RB/ 2nd team KR), Sam Brown (1st team DB), Carleton Brown (2nd team DL), and Todd Simmons (2nd Team DB). Juniors Ronald Perkins (3rd team OL) and Davante Washington (3rd Team LB) were also voted on the All-Conference team. Branden Walker was also nominated for a National “Player of the Week” Award after his 5 TD performance against Parkway West.
- Boys Soccer - Despite only winning four games this season, the boy's soccer team enjoyed a very competitive 2010 campaign. In addition to their four wins, the team had some narrow defeats against Rock Bridge-Columbia (0-1 OT), Trinity (0-2), Parkway West (0-1), and Kirkwood (0-1). The team loses six seniors to graduation, and the current underclassmen have already started preparing for the 2011 season.
- Boys Swim - The swim team finished the season with a 5-12 record. They placed 8th overall in the Suburban South Conference meet. Luke Babich, Carson Brandt, Cedric Rutlin, Rashod Doyle, Lawrence McCadney, and Matthew Russell received All-Conference for the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay. The team continued their tradition of competing in the Cape Rock Invitational in Cape Girardeau where several team members set personal records.
- Cheerleaders - The cheerleaders have finished a successful fall season cheering for many sports. The squad incorporated a mascot this season and some new stunts. The cheerleaders are transitioning into the winter season and plan to add a second squad.
- Poms - The Golden Girls Dance Team and Lionette Pom team performed at various pep-rallies, assemblies, in several parades, and during home football games. They also traveled to Birmingham, Alabama with the Golden Explosion Marching band in October.

There were about 70 volunteers from the Athletic Department that took part in the "Neighborhood Leaf Rake" this past Saturday. Coaches, student-athletes, parents, and Booster Club members spent several hours this past Saturday going door-to-door in the community making friends and raking leaves in the streets surrounding the high school and Jackson Park. This great neighborhood event was a part of "National Service Day," and was a huge success. Volunteers from the football, field hockey, boy's basketball, cross country, softball, cheerleaders, wrestling, track, girl's tennis, and boy's soccer all pitched in to help "Make a Difference" in our neighborhood. A big "Thank You" to all that participated and the Booster Club for providing lunch for all of the volunteers!
The Girl's Volleyball team will compete in the MSHSAA District Tournament this week at Incarnate Word Academy. The #4 Lions will play # 5 Gateway on October 26 at 4:00pm. If they win, they will advance to the semi-finals to play Incarnate Word on October 27 at 4:00pm. Tournament Bracket
The Boy's Soccer team will compete in the MSHSAA District Tournament on Saturday, October 30. The Lions will play the Clayton Greyhounds at 2:00pm at MICDS in the opening round. The Field Hockey Team finished 2nd in the St. Louis Public School Tournament this past Friday. The #3 Lions knocked off #2 Marquette and advanced to the Championship game against the #1 Lafayette Lancers. The Lions dropped an exciting and competitive Championship game 1-0 on Friday. The team will open the Midwest Field Hockey Tournament on Thursday, October 28 (Midwest Field Hockey Tournament Bracket)
Cross Country will compete in the MSHSAA District Championship meet on Saturday, October 30. The meet is at Warrenton High School. The girls race is at 11:00am and the boys race starts at 11:30am.
Athletic Family Night is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9 at the High School. The event will start at 6:00 with an Athletic Fair (information on winter and fall athletics) and dinner will be served at 6:30. Je'Mone Smith will be the keynote speaker and discuss the recruiting process, the NCAA Clearinghouse, and how he made it from a small college to the NFL (Philadelphia Eagles). Chad Kish will follow with information about U City Athletics, high school eligibility, and understanding the recruiting process. The event is free of charge and will have exciting door prizes.

The Lions opened the Public School Field Hockey tournament on Monday, October 18 at 5:00pm against Clayton at Marquette High School. The #3 Lions defeated Clayton 4-2 and will advance to a showdown with #2 Marquette at Lafayette at 5:00pm on Wednesday, October 20. The finals are on Friday, October 22.

The Field Hockey team won an exciting game on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Kirkwood. The Lions scored with 4 seconds remaining in OT to earn the third place slot in this week's 14 team Public School Tournament. The Lions open the tournament on Monday, October 18 at 5:00pm against Clayton at Marquette High School. The tournament will resume on Wednesday and Friday of this week. The team would advance to a showdown with #2 Marquette (or Webster Groves) at Lafayette at 5:00pm on Wednesday with a win on Monday.
The Lions played an exciting Homecoming Football game and had a chance for a come-from-behind win late in the fourth quarter before falling to Clayton 21-14. A crowd of over 4,000 people enjoyed the game after the conclusion of the parade, and everyone that was involved in planning and working any of the Homecoming festivities is applauded!
The Cross Country team had an outstanding afternoon at the Suburban South Conference meet at Buder Park on Friday. David Lambus finished second and set a New School Record by finishing at 15:56 Four other team members also set personal records (PR) at the event: Sam Polzin, Carl Sechrist, Raheem Tolber, and Eleiana Hudson.
The Athletic Department will be sponsoring a Neighborhood Leaf Rake on Saturday, October 23 at 10:00am-12:00 noon. Please join us at 9:00am for the Middle School Football game, then help us show our neighbors we appreciate their hospitality by bringing a rake and joining the athletes in their fall community service project.

The softball team plays their final game of the season today (10/11) against Principia at 4:15pm at Heman Park. Please come support the Lions as the try to win their final game of the season and reach eleven wins! The softball team has had a great season playing for the Suburban East Conference Tournament Championship and reaching the 10 win plateau.
David Lambus won the Varsity Boy's race at the Border War's Cross Country Invitational at McNair Park in St. Charles. His time of 16:17 for 5K (slightly over 3 miles) was a new meet record. Carl Sechrist ran a PR (Personal Record) of 19:48 in the boy's varsity race. Eliana Hudson (PR of 22:15) and Claire Hulett were medalists in the girl's varsity race.

10/23 - Athletic Department Neighborhood Leaf Rake: The fall athletes and coaches will be doing their part during National Service Day by holding a neighborhood leaf rake on Saturday, October 23. All neighbors of the high school are asked to place rakes and bags on their front porch in the morning, as the athletes will rake yards and bag leaves between 10am and noon. The City is providing pick-up on October 25-29th for leaves.
10/18 - University City High School Boys Soccer will play North County Tech at
4:00 pm in a Breast cancer Awareness Game at North County Tech. Teams will be supporting the cause by wearing "PINK" and a $1 donation will be charged at the gate for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Please support this cause by attending the game, wearing pink, and making a donation.
10/5 - University City Girls Tennis won the team title at the McCluer Invitational on October 1. Jasmine Dennis took second place in the Singles bracket, while Rachel Sobotka and Meagh Hopes won the championship in the Doubles.

The Volleyball team started off the season with three straight wins and finished fourth in the McCluer Northside Invitational. The next home game for the high school is Monday, October 4 at 4:15 vs. Clayton.
Girls Varsity Softball is rolling with a 9-7 season record. Portia Terry leads the team with a .523 batting average. The Lions host Parkway Central on Monday, September 27 at Heman Park (4:15pm). The softball team will also play Ladue in a double-header on Tuesday at Heman Park. The 3:30 game will be the Suburban east Conference Tournament Championship Game and the 5:00game will be the regular season game. Please support the Lions in their pursuit of the school's first Conference Championship of the 2010-11 school year.
It is a great week to come see the boy's soccer team, as they host Clayton at 4:00pm on Tuesday, September 28 and Hazelwood East at 4:15pm on Wednesday, September 29.

Matt Keller named "Missouri State Boys' Track Coach of the Year." Keller's Boys' Track & Field team won the Class 3 MSHSAA Boys Track & Field Championship in 2010. This effort, along with his dedication and effort through his career has enabled him to win the honors for Boy's Outdoor Track & Field. There is only one winner from the state, and winning the award comes with a nomination for Regional and possibly National "Coach of the Year."

The Girls Tennis team is playing in the Suburban South/West Tennis Championships on Monday, September 20 through Wednesday, September 22. University City is playing in "Group D" at Rockwood Summit High School (Fenton, MO). The tournament starts at 3:45 each day, and the Lions will be competing against Rockwood Summit, Webster Groves, and Mehlville.
The Varsity Volleyball team will be competing in the Ritenour Invitational on Saturday, September 25. The Lions play Ritenour at 8:00am, Alton (IL) at 10:15am, and Hazelwood Central at 11:45am all in pool play format. The top two teams in each pool advance to a tournament at 1:00pm. The JV Field Hockey Team will be competing in the St. Louis JV Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday, October 2 at Ladue High School. The Lions play in pool play format against Ladue at 9:00am, Lafayette at 10:00am, and Brentwood at 10:30am. The tournament will start at 2:00pm at Ladue and be scheduled based on pool play standings. Notre Dame from Cape Girardeau won the U City Swim Relays on Friday. It was a packed house at the Natatorium, and the U City Swimmers had a solid performance.

The UCHS Boys Soccer team won their season opener over Crossroads at home by the score of 3-0. Darian Kinsey scored two goals and Gianni Cook (freshman) scored in his first Varsity game. James Lenard recorded a shut-out as the Lions goalkeeper.

The Girls Field Hockey team is 3-1-1 on the season. They made it to the Championship Game of their division in the Gateway Classic Tournament over Labor Day before losing their first game of the season to Rosati-Kain. The University City Field Hockey team was the KPLR 11 "Team of the Week," and was featured this weekend on several broadcasts. See the replay on the KPLR website.
The Girls Volleyball team opened their season on Friday with a win over McCluer South-Berkeley.

The softball team was rained out in the Suburban East Conference Championship game on 9/1. The Lions will host Ladue Horton-Watkins HS in a double-header on September 28 (Tuesday) starting at 3:30pm at Heman Park. The first game will be the Conference Tournament Championship Game.
The University City High School Football team received a huge honor this week after their 50-22 win over Parkway West. Head Coach Rob Battle was named the "St. Louis Rams High School Football Coach of the Week." Rob Battle was making his debut as the Head Coach after serving the last several seasons as the Offensive Coordinator. University City's Football program will receive a grant from the Rams in Coach battle's honor.

U City Running Back nominated for U.S. Army Iron Man Award
Branden Walker had a great game to open the 2010 football season. Walker is a running back for University City High School and played a huge role in the Lions 50-22 defeat of Parkway West on Friday, August 28. He scored 6 touchdowns, rushed for 215 yards, added 108 kick return yards, and added a solo tackle on the defensive side of the ball. Walker was one of five players in the state that was nominated for the Missouri Army Iron Man Award. He needs your help to become the Award winner. The University City Softball team improved their season record to 2-2 with a 15-0 win over Normandy in the opening round of the Suburban East Conference Softball Tournament.
The Lions advance to the semi-finals of the Suburban East Conference Tournament on Tuesday, August 31 at 4:00pm. If they win, they will play for the Championship on Wednesday, September 1 at 4:00pm. The semi-finals and finals are held at Shaw Park, located at 111 South Brentwood Boulevard Clayton, MO 63105.

The University City High School fall sports season is off to a good start.
The Varsity Football team defeated Parkway West on Friday by a score of 50-22. The Lions held the Longhorns scoreless in the second half, outscoring them 21-0. Brandon Walker was in the spotlight, scoring 6 touchdowns, and piling up 215 yards rushing, with 108 yards on kick returns. DeVante Washington rushed for 81 yards, and Sam Brown added 103 put return yards.
The Softball team grabbed their first win of the season with a 26-4 win over Cleveland NJROTC on Friday. Chrissy Thompson slugged 2 home runs in the win.
University City will host the #1 ranked football team in the state this Friday, September 3. The #1 ranked Statesmen from Webster Groves will pay Muhl-Schimmer Stadium and the Lions a visit on Friday at 4:15 p.m. Faculty and Staff are invited to the game and will receive an admission waiver with their district ID.
