“English as a Second Language (ESL) Program”
An English as a Second Language (ESL) program, also called English as a Foreign Language (EFL), is an English language study program. The goal of the University City Adult Education and Literacy ESL program is to improve a student's level of English. ESL classes teach different English language skills, depending on students' English abilities, interests, and needs. All classes teach the following: conversational English, grammar, reading, listening comprehension, writing, and vocabulary. Students are also encouraged to participate in the cultural and social activities of the school and community where they study.
Many people go to ESL schools to prepare for study at a College or University while others study at ESL schools to improve their English for travel or social purposes. Students come from various cultural backgrounds and countries all over the world. For the most part, students are motivated and realize the need to learn the English Language in order to pursue other educational and employment opportunities.
English classes are offered during the morning and evening hours for beginning, intermediate and advanced level students at the main location. Additional classes in Citizenship and EL/Civics are also offered at various sites in the University City area. While the Citizenship class focuses on helping you to become a US citizen, the EL/Civics class helps students gain proficiency in English and navigate governmental, educational, and workplace systems.
