2012 UCity Sports Camp heats up this summer
In its sixth year, the 2012 UCHS Athletic Boosters' Summer Sports Camp was in full swing the week of June 11-15 with 15 different sports for students in third through seventh grade. Campers pre-registered for up to four sports clinics each day with full or partial day options.
"The Summer Sports Camp is a great way for kids to try out new sports or improve their skills in a sport they already play," said Marisa Davenport Sheppard, head director of the SSC. "With the increase in child obesity we really need to get all kids involved in some physical activity and this sampler style camp is a great way for them to try out new sports and physical activities."
About 100 student-athletes were involved in the program to experience sports such as baseball, wrestling, golf, cheerleading, waterpolo and more.
This year, there were 88 campers, of whom 34 received some level of tuition scholarship thanks to the support of Royal Banks of Missouri and Bulte Company, in addition to the co-sponsorship by the UCHS Athletic Boosters Club, School District of University City and City of University City. District Summer Learning Academy students were able to attend afternoon clinics with transportation provided by the District.
"Having our younger athletes get exposure to the sports offered at the middle and high schools is a great way to build the participation and competition levels at those higher levels," added Sheppard. "Campers love interacting with the high school student-athletes and it's a great way to build enthusiasm for the sport at these levels."
Assistant camp director Nancy Mozier added, "This camp also offers an opportunity for the current high school student-athlete volunteers to work alongside the coaches to teach younger students important skills. They learn more than just the techniques of the sport, but also overall wellness and nutrition along with character traits of teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication."
