Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration, Jan. 14
The School District of University City will host its 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Saturday, January 14 at 2:00 p.m. The event begins with a short parade originating at Jackson Park Elementary School and traveling west on Balson toward Hanley, then back east toward the University City High School auditorium located at 7401 Balson Ave.
The community is invited to join District staff and students in commemorating Dr. King's legacy. Redditt Hudson will be honored as the recipient of the Board of Education's 2012 MLK Spirit Award. A 1983 graduate of University City High School, Hudson attended Pershing Elementary and Brittany and Hanley Junior Highs. After graduating from St. Louis University, Hudson began his first career as a law enforcement officer. He now serves as the program associate for the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri and is a strong advocate for minority rights and criminal and racial justice issues.
The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration in University City will feature students and staff sharing writing, artwork and music on the theme of “Remembering the man, embracing his vision!” Board of Education Director Rodney Jennings Sr. will share excerpts from one of Dr. King’s speeches. The Mayor's Task Force on Seniors and Youth will also be conducting the Youth Survey Prize Drawing during the program.
