Students showcase new science, English classrooms at UCHS
Students demonstrated science experiments, exhibited Pele the robot and talked about classes and activities at the University City High School (UCHS) Tour Our Schools open house on April 1. Representatives from Bond Wolf Architects and the District operations department provided guided tours of the newly renovated third-floor science wing.
Teachers answered questions about the new labs and science curriculum, as well as new English rooms and language arts curriculum. Attendees included parents of current and upcoming UCHS students, community members and parents of former students.
“I talked to one couple with no kids currently in the District who wanted to come see what their tax money was being spent on,” said Cassandra Conner, chemistry and earth science teacher. “They said it looked like a college lab and not a high school.”
Conner said she enjoys having a preparation room connected to the lab, which allows a teacher on plan period to be preparing labs for a later class without interrupting the current class.
Chemistry teacher and science department chair Matt Brooks participated in the open house event and thought it was well attended.
“My impression was that the people there were impressed by our students and what they were explaining,” he said. “I think the students had fun, too.”
