Bond Issue Update (Feb. 23, 2010)

Reprinted as published in March 2010 issue of PRIDE

Bond issue building projects are progressing on schedule

In April 2009, the University City community approved a $53.6 million bond issue for renovations and new construction as part of the Board-approved plan developed by the Destination U. City Schools community involvement process.

Since then, the District has been working closely with McCarthy/KWAME, a joint venture of Kwame Building Group and McCarthy; AMERESCO and architect Bond-Wolfe.

Current projects include the brand new Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School. Building construction is due to be completed in February 2011 and the first classes will convene that fall.

Earlier this year, the University City Board of Education unanimously approved the execution of trade contracts for building permit fees, masonry, plumbing, data and communications, glass and glazing, kitchen equipment, elevator, mechanical and electrical work, paving, landscaping, roofing, painting, flooring, fire protection and other general works needed to begin the new construction.

The new two-story, 64,834-square-foot facility will feature 24 classroom, including several specialized classrooms and spaces that will enable students to do more exploratory work and self-discovery. The new building will be built seeking a LEED certification.
Preserving history and enhancing the intimate feel, several architectural features were recycled from the old building and incorporated into the new facility to enhance the intimate feel of the school, including mosaic tiles from around water fountains, an entryway tile mural and a freestanding masonry memorial bench.

“The new school building will provide a better learning environment through improved day lighting, air quality and technology accommodations,” said Kevin Ferguson, KWAME vice president. “The eco-friendly aspects of this facility also will serve as a working lab for teachers and students to learn more about the environment and green sustainability.”

At Brittany Woods Middle School (BWMS), preparation has begun for the footings of the new media center and the canopied, front circle driveway. Both additions are scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2010.

As work continues at University City High School (UCHS), the handicap parking spaces and ADA-compliant entrance are in full use. Cosmetic improvements continue through the building. One of the most exciting completions is the state-of-the-art science wing, including biology, physics, chemistry and earth science labs, that is currently in use by classes.

“The science department is very excited about the new wing,” said Matt Brooks, UCHS science department chair. “The facilities provide more space for our students and provide the structural support for our Professional Learning Communities and expand our instructional opportunities.”

An open house is scheduled for Thursday, April 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“I would like to personally invite everyone in the community to see how their bond issue funds are transforming our buildings into schools for the 21st century,” said Timothy Wernentin, UCHS principal, who is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. to discuss changes planned for the upcoming school year.

The District’s finance/bond issue oversight committee continues to meet regularly and monitors the progress of all projects.
