Delmar-Harvard's Unity Night!

Delmar-Harvard students informed and entertained an appreciative audience of family and friends during the school’s annual Unity Night celebration February 23.  The theme for the evening was “Celebrating African American History,” which was portrayed by each class presenting biographical information about groups of significant African Americans, followed by a musical presentation of songs written by African Americans.

The kindergarten class (Ms. Marsha Nash and Ms. Moira Kelly, teachers) presented information about African American inventors and sang “We’re Not That Different.”

First grade (Ms. Jill Goldstein) told us about African American Entertainers and sang “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”

Second grade (Ms. Nikki Weiss and Ms. Rachel Mueller) recited “Friends” by Louis Latimer, African American poet and sang “Shake a Tail Feather.”

Third grade (Ms. Channa Hankins) reported on African American Athletes and sang “Think.”

Fourth grade (Ms. Debbie Rosso and Ms. Kate Kaczerowski) informed us about African American politicians and sang and danced to “Just My Imagination” and “Where Did Our Love Go?”

Fifth grade (Ms. Katherine Sykes) honored African Americans in Education by presenting first-person accounts of the Little Rock Nine‘s experience in desegregating an Arkansas high school in 1957. They also performed a dance to “September.”

Sixth grade (Ms. Sandra Feemster) presented a tribute to “What We Can Become” with their drumming presentation and dance to “Everyday People.”

This special evening was possible because of the efforts of our music teacher, Ms. Rachel Nold, the members of the Unity Night Planning Committee (Ms. Sandra Feemster, Ms. Marsha Nash, Ms. Katherine Sykes, Ms. Kate Kaczerowski and Ms.Nold) and, of course, our classroom teachers who helped with many hours of practice sessions.

The evening closed with the whole school singing “We Are the World,” with solos by the following students:  Aliyah Merrill (Gr. 5), Bella Dearmitt (Gr. 3),  Caleb Perkins (Gr. 4), Caleb Tillis (Gr. 3), Christion Simmons (Gr. 6), Reggie Morris (Gr. 6) and Zhong-Mei Webb (Gr. 4).
