2008: A Season to Remember

by Cameron Albritton

May 25, 2009

                                                              History
Following in the fiery footsteps of the previous graduation class of 2008, the newly revamped class of 2009 embarked on a gloomy yet promising adventure. Haunted by the anguishing season-ending home loss to their arch rivals, the Normandy Vikings, the Lions had more than just revenge on their mind. Equipped with a strengthened offensive line, new defensive philosophy and playmakers on both sides of the ball, the stage was set for an astounding season.

Following a near shut-out by Hazelwood Central, many players and coaches were left not only frustrated but puzzled as well. “The game was a test to see exactly where we were at, it really showed a lot,” remarked Head Coach Duane Hawthorne. For the following 9 regular season games, adjustments were made and personnel was re-arranged to make the best fit for the team and put the Lions in position to win. Fortunately, one blow out game did not dictate the tempo of the remaining season as the Lions were able to remarkably turn things around. The Lions later finished with a 5-5 record, the best recorded since 1999. However, the last victory in the regular season was the most meaningful victory of all to be earned by the Lions this season.
Ranked number 7 in large schools and armed with an impressive 9-0 record, the Vikings were more than a challenge for the Lions. With a 28-28 tie at the end of regulation, the Lions' vision of revenge looked very foggy. However, with a late touchdown in overtime and a 4th down stop, the Lions' dreams became reality as they hoisted the district title for the first time in 10 years.
