Results From The Annual UCHS Biotechnology Debates

by Julie Ertmann

March 09, 2010

Twenty-two freshmen from Ms. Ertmann's honors biology classes debated in the UCHS annual biotechnology debates today. Each team of two students prepared for one of three topics over the last two months by researching, collaborating and practicing their public speaking skills.  Today, the top four scoring teams on each topic debated in a single elimination tournament until there was only one team winner on each topic.

Topic 1 was, "Should embryonic stem cell research be publicly funded?"  The topic one winners were Grace Deitzler and Anna Soifer.

Topic 2 was, "Should foods containing GM (genetically modified) ingredients require a label ?"  The topic two winners were Lafayette Gatewood and Sam Polzin.

Topic 3 was, "Should the U.S. government create a DNA database of all citizens at birth?"  The topic three winners were Michael Sarber and Jacob Stueck.

As technology progresses to allow scientists to manipulate life, the ethical issues surrounding the uses of biotechnology abound. We have a duty to learn about these issues so that we can make informed decisions about them in the future.  Ms. Ertmann would like to thank all of her students, judges and other helpers that made the event a success.  You can access more pictures at Ms. Ertmann's web page.

05/02/2008 I feel that the debate was very well organized. The students that took pride in the assignment did extremely well. I could surely tell who actually knew what they were talking about and not just reading off flash cards but actually went deep in details and were convincing to the audience.. Job well done Mrs. Ertmann.. -Gabrielle Smith P.S. I want to be some way involved with next years debate. [smile] Gabrielle Smith gabbie41992@yahoo.com University.MO student
