Back-to-School Rally - August 1, 2009

With classes resuming on August 17, the School District of University City will mark the end of summer vacation for hundreds of students by sponsoring their third annual Back-to-School Rally on Saturday, August 1 on the McNair Campus. Due to expected heat, the timeframe has been moved earlier to 9 a.m. to noon.
In 2007, the District gave away nearly 1,500 backpacks filled with school supplies and superseded that amount in 2008 with nearly 2,000 backpacks filled with supplies mostly donated by Cardinal Care and more than 1,000 lunch boxes. Local community organizations and the schools hosted booths and activities for the students and their families. This year, the District is looking to give away more backpacks and include more local organizations and schools in the event.
Planners are expecting to continue to offer free backpacks and school supplies for students along with enrollment, bond issue and other school information; free hair cuts, free immunizations*, student-athlete physicals*, health screenings; hands-on educational activities including arts & crafts, health & wellness, athletic demonstrations as well as musical entertainment, food and prizes.
*Immunizations and Student-Athlete Physicals require pre-registration. A nominal fee may be charged at the event for the physical that is sufficient to fulfill the high school athletic participation requirement. Call 314/290-4007 to register by July 30.
The rally is open to all school-aged children who reside within University City. More than 1,000 children and their families members are expected to attend this fun-filled event. Parent/Guardians are required to accompany and supervise children at all times during this event.

The event is seeking donations of a variety of items including, but not limited to, school supplies for children in kindergarten through twelfth grades, food, event prizes or promotional give-a-ways and/or financial support. Local vendors or community organizations willing to provide free services such as hair cuts, health screenings (vision, dental, chiropractic, etc.), program information, entertainment or demonstrations are also needed. Local not-for profit and educational organizations, clubs and institutions are invited to have an activity booth or table at the event.
