It's Electric! Darwin the Dinosaur at Edison Theatre

As part of our on-going partnership with Washington University, students in grades K-4 attended a multimedia performance of Darwin the Dinosaur in the Edison Theatre at the University on May 7.  Created by CORBIAN Visual Arts and Dance Company, Darwin the Dinosaur is a kind of electrical puppet show where electroluminescent crayon-like creatures light up the stage.  The show is an innovative mix of puppetry, dance, storytelling and do-it-yourself technology. Our students were amazed and enthralled.

Working mostly with common household objects—such as skateboards, shin guards and paint poles—the company created 20 life-size puppets (dinosaurs, animals, people.)  Then the puppets were outfitted with approximately 2000 feet of electroluminescent wire, powered by 250 AA and 9-volt batteries.  The “electric” puppets are worn or operated by company members performing on a darkened stage.

Washington University students were at Delmar-Harvard on April 23 to lead students through a series of activities related to electricity in preparation for the play.  In addition, the University has donated sets of books to our students on Leonardo DaVinci, the genius who created both art and science.
