Iowa Educator Named New High School Principal
ST. LOUIS,
April 29, 2009 – The School District of University City has named
45-year-old Timothy R. Wernentin as the new principal of University
City High School (UCHS).
Wernentin has been
an educator for more than 20 years. He is currently the
principal of Central High School in Davenport, IA. He was
among 23 nationwide candidates who applied for the post. He
will be officially introduced during the district’s board of
education meeting on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m. The board
of education meeting will be held at the McNair Administration
Building which is located at 8136 Groby Rd.
“I’m extremely
excited about the opportunity to become the principal of University
City High School. Everyone that I have met has been extremely
supportive, gracious and welcoming,” said Wernentin.
“Mr. Wernentin
comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience in both middle
school and high school education,” said Superintendent Joylynn L.
Wilson. “I think he is going to do great things for the high
school.”
Wernentin will
replace current UCHS interim principal Christopher Blumenhorst, who
was formerly an assistant principal at the school, but will now
serve as an associate principal. Wernentin plans to make
several visits to University City prior to taking over the reigns
at UCHS on July 1. He plans to meet with a number of
stakeholder groups to “get a feel for where the school is at and
where it needs to be.”
Additionally, he
said his top priorities will focus on addressing student
achievement, looking at areas of growth for the school and
revitalizing the tradition that UCHS holds in the community with
its staff and students.
Wernentin holds a Bachelor’s degree from Cornell College and earned his Masters and Education Specialist degrees from Western Illinois University. He is also a member of several Davenport area civic groups and has received numerous awards for his administrative leadership. He currently resides in Bettendorf, IA.
