Reading opens the window of a child’s mind and allows exploration of the world to happen.  When a child develops great reading skills, a lifelong journey begins.  Not only does reading provide wonderful experiences, it also assist in building your child’s writing and speaking skills.  The ability to be a good reader is priceless.  Therefore, it  is important to build and maintain good reading skills. Here are a few tips to help your child to be a fantastic reader.

  •  Set aside regular reading time with your child.

  •  Read daily with your child.  This can be done while cooking or driving in the car. Have them read menus, roadside signs, game directions, weather reports, movie time listings, and other practical everyday information.

  •   Ask your child to explain whatever he or she reads.  Use questions such, as -What was it mostly about? What did you like best?  What did you learn?

  •  Provide many reading materials for your child.  Weekly trips to the local library are a good way to gather reading materials. Also, many libraries offer reading programs.

  • Encourage your child to keep a journal for writing or drawing pictures about reading.

  •  Listen as your child reads aloud to you to build speed and expression.

  • Show enthusiasm for reading by reading along with your child. Make it a fun enjoyable time that your child loves.
