Nathaniel Hawthorne's Celebration of the National Drop Everything and Read Day (D.E.A.R)!

READING IS MUSIC FOR YOUR MIND!

by Kathy Edwards

April 15, 2008

Parents in grades K-3 were invited to come to school and read with their children on Friday, April 11, from 2:00-2:30 in recognition of the National Drop Everything and Read Day (D.E.A.R.).

National D.E.A.R. Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage students to make reading a daily priority. This event is sponsored by NEA, along with other educational organizations.

Students were encouraged to bring a blanket, pillow or stuffed animal to read with for relaxation. Each student received a book from RIF (Reading Is Fundamental). As a culminating activity, each class participated in a writing activity related to the free book they received, i.e. book summaries, acrostic poems, book reviews, literature circles or an illustration and a short description of the book.

The students and staff enjoyed this relaxing time after MAP testing. Our theme was READING IS MUSIC FOR YOUR MIND!
