Tuskegee Tigers Take a Trip

by Kim Fileccia

April 01, 2008

On March 20, 2008, the Tuskegee Tigers went to the National Tiger Sanctuary.  Before the field trip, we did several interdisciplinary activities about tigers and conservation.  Because of all the excitement of actually being close to tigers, two students, Diana Pluma-Leal and Grace Deitzler, organized a fund raiser called the “Tuskegee Tiger Project.”  They raised over 180 dollars to donate to the sanctuary.  The staff at the sanctuary taught the students about different types of tigers, why they are extinct, and why it is important to save the tigers that are left in the wild as well as those in captivity.

While at the sanctuary the students were able to stand within 3 feet of a living tiger.  Many students were amazed to find out how similar tigers behavior is to a human.  The students watched a video of the tigers as young cubs and were able to see their growth progress.  Students were able to observe the tigers in an up close and personal way.

We all enjoyed the trip to the sanctuary and we hope to make this a yearly trip.
