Welcome to the "Did you know?" page, containing informational tidbits about the School District of University City!
- The School District of University City will host its first Anti-Bullying Awareness Week February 18-22. Various events will be held at all District schools.
- In its Monday, February 18 edition, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch featured University City High School Junior Julian Nicks in its “Spotlight on Education” column. Julian is a scholar athlete, student rep to the Board of Education and vice president of the National Honor Society.
- On Saturday, February 9, the Brittany Woods Middle School Jazz Big Band won 5 outstanding soloist awards and took the 2nd place trophy for the best Junior High Jazz band at the 22nd Annual MU/Phi Alpha Jazz Festival. Soloist awards went to Ben Aronberg - Piano, Joey Ferber - Guitar, Terrance Childs - Trombone, Sam Katz - Alto Sax and Zach Morrow - Drums.
- Four University City High School Wrestlers qualified to compete at the state championships. They were Justin Nicks, Patrick McKnight, Yondell Bass and Demarco Kemp. Each qualified after competing in the Class 3 District 2 Wrestling championships. On Saturday, February 16, Demarco Kemp placed 2nd in the Missouri Wrestling Championships.
- University CityHigh Schoolfootball players David Bass and Justin White signed National Letters of Intent to play football at Missouri Western, a NCAA Division II University. They are the first of this years student-athletes to make commitments to offering schools.
- UCHS sophomore, Lydia Derlfer, will be one of nearly 200 students across Missouri to be accepted into the 2008 Missouri Fine Arts Academy that will be this summer at Missouri State University, June 8 - 28, 2008. The Academy provides a unique program of artisitic, extracurricular, and social opportunities to Missouri's talented high school students in the areas of dance, visual arts, theater and music.
- Each principal is presenting their School Improvement Plans during the District’s Board of Education meetings. Improvement plans for Flynn Park and Barbara C. Jordan Elementary Schools as well as Brittany Woods Middle School and University City High School have already been presented. The principals at Nathaniel Hawthorne, Pershing, Jackson Park. Julia Goldstein Early Education Center, Delmar-Harvard and the Lieberman Learning Center will discuss their school improvement plans on February 21, March 6 and March 20.
- District leaders hosted a meeting with members and representatives of Missouri’s Legislative team on Friday, February 8. It was the first time both groups met. The discussions focused on District programs, operations and funding initiatives.
- Comic book writer Steve Gerber, best known as the creator of Howard the Duck is a graduate of University City High School. Gerber, passed away on February 10, 2008. He was 60-years-old.
