The "Tops" in Science

Science Club has been such a wonderful addition to Nathaniel Hawthorne! We offer a weekly after school Science Club for students in grades 3-6. More than 30 students participate. Third and fourth grade meet on Monday while fifth and sixth grade meet on Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.
The club is led by Mr. Chambers who runs our science lab and Mr. More, one of our terrific fourth grade teachers. This after-school, standards-based science program allows kids to complete activities in conjunction with the GLE's. They work together to perform engaging and educational science activities. It also provides students a fun, entertaining way to learn science.
Students are currently working on physics experiments involving a motion study. This experiment is based on resistance and friction using various materials to determine which has the greatest rotational inertia. The students learned that the tops having the greatest percentage of mass on the outside rim will spin the longest or travel the furthest. Wow! The students are so excited about the learning and fun that is taking place!
