My name is Ms. Powers and I have been a library media specialist at UCHS since the 2002-2003 school year. I was the library media specialist at two elementary schools, Barbara C. Jordan and Flynn Park, for six years before I came to high school. My favorite thing about my job is sharing books and other library materials with my students. I think anyone can be a good reader, as long as you are interested in something and curious enough to investigate that subject.
Part of our U C Us Read program requires students to tell us what they have read. It is only fair that I tell our students about what I like to read.
My pets are my biggest interest outside of school. I like to read animal books from our library including All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriott, about a veterinarian in the country in England. I also like Cat in the Dark
and the rest of the Joe Grey mystery series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy. It is about descendants of ancient Celtic cats who are part human and part feline. They feel human emotions, understand human language, read, talk, and solve crimes.I also like to knit outside of school because it keeps my hands busy. My favorite knitting book at UCHS is America Knits by Melanie Falick. This book shows people from all over the country who are involved with fiber arts. I love the profiles of people who raise sheep or alpaca to make into yarn.
I read about other things, too. Here is a list of my favorite books from UCHS library:
Tsar by Peter Kurth
Oscar Micheaux, the Great and Only by Patrick McGilligan
Powder Burn by Daniel Glick
Bright Boulevards, Bold Dreams by Donald Bogle
Life is Not a Fairy Tale by Fantasia
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
Walden: 150th Anniversary Illustrated Edition by henry David Thoreau
Julia Child by Laura Shapiro
I am currently reading The Fate of the Romanovs by Greg King and Penny Wilson. It is about the murders of the last royal family of Russia.
You can find a book on just about any subject that you are interested in our library. If we don't have a particular book that you would like to read, let us know and we will try to add it to our library collection.
See you soon!
